This is a shocking and one more sad casualty of this virus. I’ve not heard of any restaurant worker here in Charlotte that’s died of the virus but many restaurants regularly are shutting down because staff has be exposed. I don’t understand the political statements made by not wearing masks or getting the vaccines. It’s beyond my comprehension. There are only a few restaurants that I’ll go to here in North Carolina. Servers and staff wear masks, masks are required by patrons except when sitting and eating. Restaurant has distanced tables and is spotlessly clean. I’m grateful for those who continue to work under these trying and hazardous conditions. Since the beginning I’ve worn my mask in stores and other indoor places. I do it to protect myself and others unlike an acquaintance of mine who announced that he had gotten vaccinated to protect himself and not anyone else which he then proved by exiting the restaurant with no mask. Total jerk. There are so many of them.

This all just sucks. My beloved industry is getting its ass kicked.

What a heartbreaking, but critically important article. Very telling, that states are not recording the statistics on occupations of those who succumbed to Covid. Thank you for digging into this. My heart goes out to all in the service industry.

Hanna Raskin is a thoughtful observer of the culinary world, especially in the southeast USA, and her observations are certainly worth attention. Thanks to Hannah for the research she did to write this article re the toll of COVID on the Food and Beverage industry. Lot of ways you can look at and interpret the stats. But one thing is for sure. COVID has taken a heavy toll on F&B employees but they are still on the front lines helping keep the economy alive and folks fed. I know because the last call I made yesterday as the sleet peppered my house was to a F&B employee riding out the storm alone with COVID. Just to make sure that under the circumstances they were okay.
