If you're looking elsewhere across the country to southern joints, I'd recommend taking a look at Pine State biscuits in Portland, OR. As I understand it, the place was created by some UNC grads who missed their beloved Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen in Chapel Hill. Having been to both, the food is pretty different other than a shared base of "we make biscuits". The Pine State versions are zhuzhed up quite a bit compared to the very basic fixins you get at Sunrise. But it's a neat place.
I was going to give up reading this and then you visited the Gritz Cafe. That was a good read. Loved the portrait of the portrait. Well done. Next time in Las Vegas I’ll make the time for Gritz.
